As I spend time in Internet forums, various blogs and other social networking sites, I find this recurring theme being played out like a broken record. The Berry Tree is a scam. This complaint is due, for the most part, to a few supposed problems; they charge a membership fee to join, the bonus pools are too small, it takes a too long to make any significant money and too many people fail with the business. In this article I will address these complaints, as well as the accusation that MLM’s in general and The Berry Tree in particular, are scams.

I’m intrigued by how freely the word scam is thrown around these days, aimed like a sniper’s rifle at anything that smacks of MLM, The Berry Tree included. In most cases these accusations are by people who are simply misinformed. Or, they are by people who feel they’ve been burned by MLM and they’re on a mission to bring the entire industry to it’s knees! Not exactly what I would call credible witnesses. I wouldn’t build a court case based on their testimony.

To determine the truth of such accusations, I suppose some definitions are in order. I turned to our good friend, Mr. Webster, and what I found was both interesting and informative. The definition of the word scam is “a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation,” or, “an attempt to make money by fraudulent means.” Fraud. Scam. Deception. Those are strong words and should not be spoken lightly! If one is going to hurl those words like a cannon ball at the MLM industry, and more specifically, at The Berry Tree, one had better be sure of ones facts.

Let’s take a closer look at the above accusations in light of these definitions. MLM’s like The Berry Tree, charge a membership fee in exchange for which the distributor receives products, marketing and training tools, mentorship, etc. They in turn, get the rights to profit from the business. That sounds pretty fair to me. It’s not unlike buying into a McDonald’s, or Starbucks Franchise. To own a franchise, one will have to pay Franchise fees. So what’s the difference?

If a membership or start-up fee makes The Berry Tree or any MLM a scam, then by definition, charging franchise fees to open a McDonald’s or Starbucks is also a scam. Now, the start up cost for most MLM’s is under $100, whereas the franchise fees above are in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Which of these do you suppose would enable the average person to become a successful business owner and realize great wealth and financial freedom?

If promising someone they will make money with an MLM, only for them to end up in failure, is a scam, then the same is true with traditional business owners who start out with that same dream, only to fail, and go out of business. It happens every day. Most often that failure is attributable to failure on the part of the business owner to do the things necessary to succeed. And, in those cases where it was the fault of the company, insufficient training, poorly designed compensation plan or whatever, it’s still not fraud, and therefore not a scam.

Remember, scam means “by a fraudulent or deceptive act.” Just because the business owner doesn’t make the money they or the company thought they would make, either by their own fault, the company’s fault, or some combination of the two, this is not a scam. It’s not fraud. It’s bad business practice, maybe, a bad business model, maybe, bad luck, maybe, but it’s not fraud.

I’m not implying that there are not real scams out there, there certainly are. There are those phony envelope stuffing schemes, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and perhaps the most successful one of all, that inheritance that suddenly has become yours from some rich philanthropist in Nigeria who has passed away and somehow their attorney or a family member has found you and wants to give you a large sum of money, yada yada yada. Now, pay attention class, those are scams. Remember, “by fraudulent means?”

So why is The Berry Tree being accused of being a scam? Several reasons. They charge a membership fee to join, we’ve already addressed that point. It takes time to make money and the bonus pools are small. The Berry Tree is not intended to be a get rich quick scheme. It is a compensation plan based upon growing and developing a deep and stable downline. The idea is not just to build numbers, but to build quality, distributors capable of reproducing themselves and duplicating the process downward. It takes time to accomplish this.

Sure, this will pay less in the beginning, but over time, this process will produce significant long term passive residual income. The small bonus pools do not indicate a problem either, but quite the opposite. The company is entering a phase where more people are qualifying for those bonuses, which of course will deplete them somewhat. However, those same people are sponsoring new members and growing the business, which will in turn increase the bonus pools, over time. This perceived problem is in reality evidence of growth and stability.

In summary, a scam is a fraudulent or deceptive act or operation, an attempt to make money by fraudulent means. It implies intent. Poorly run companies, bad business models, people not making money due to their failure or their company’s, are not scams. They are problems for sure, but they’re not scams. Membership and franchise fees are not scams. Businesses fail, people fail, this is a fact of life. This does not make the company a scam. MLM is a solid business model and The Berry Tree is one of the best this author has ever seen. It certainly has been successful for us. The only way to fail with The Berry Tree or any good MLM is to quit.

Confessions of an Adwords Secret Agent
One of the subtitles of the book is “Play the Adwords Game and Win!”. After reading 162 pages of interesting tips, I feel that I understand what the game is all about, and that I can master it, but only if I am willing to spend time and money to do so.

Let me quote a very interesting passage from page 73.

“Be prepared to pay between $75 and $150 initially. If you do not have the money to spend, don’t get involved. Because when you put in say $200 and don’t get results, you are blowing that money and wasting it. Count the cost before you get involved in any Adwords campaign. As any businessman will tell you, PPC is all about the money. The more you have to spend, the better your ad will show and the more traffic you will get.”

When creating my previous campaigns, I thought that I could buy clicks for next to nothing, and that I would just spend $50 on a campaign and earn a massive amount of money. Well, I have learned my lesson the hard way. I have experienced only loss when it comes to running my Google Adwords campaigns, but I have only lost a couple hundred dollars. No big deal, the only problem was that I didn’t learn anything from losing the money, only that I shouldn’t copy my previous campaigns.

I have never thought about starting my Adwords campaign with keyword research, even before creating the landing page. I have always created the landing page first, then I’d be writing an advertisement, and finally, I would be looking for some relevant keywords. According to the book, it’s the other way around.

The book is packed with real examples of campaigns, and I find it easier to learn from examples.

I didn’t know that I should create a different ad group and ad for each of my top 5 keyword phrases. When creating an advertisement, relevance is what it’s all about.

I have never realized that by using Google Adwords you can also make ads visible on TV, Radio or on print ads.

NOTES: The biggest positive about AdWords Manifesto is that it stresses the fact that you should be striving to create a business rather than just getting quick cash. The REAL money is in the power of a sustainable business model and that is what you will learn in this guide. The types of products and services that you can get from Freebie Force range from free gift cards to discounted vacation packages. Each week you log into the members area where the featured Freebies are listed along with easy to follow instructions to obtain your freebies.

The membership for Freebie Force will cost you $9.95 per month, and gets you access to freebies and the income opportunity. In order to make money with Freebie Force you will have to promote the opportunity and recruit more members to build your down line in a 5 x 7 style matrix. For every person that you recruit you’ll earn $1 a month down 7 levels.

The FreebieForce opportunity sounds like an easy way to make a residual online income, but you need to remember that your referrals must keep an active membership. As soon as they stop paying you stop making money, and as with almost all MLMs the turnover rate is high.

FreebieForce will tell you that everyone stays on because you recoup your monthly fees in savings. That’s partly true but not all of the freebies offered are truly fee, for instance many of the offers require you to sign up for services or open savings accounts with certain deposit amounts.

The other thing that they don’t tell you is that Freebie Force doesn’t deal in exclusive savings offers, meaning all of the discounts/coupons/freebies can be found online for free. In fact the coupon industry is teeming with sites giving away these types of offers without the monthly fee (check out my freebie section, most of the freebies are available thru the sites listed there).

What you’re paying FreebieForce.com for is simply the convenience factor of listing some of these offers in one place, and the opportunity to profit from promoting Freebie Force memberships.

I recommend Freebie Force as an MLM opportunity, but if your just interested in getting freebies you don’t have to pay for them. There are lots of freebie sites that are totally free with the same offers.

Trying to get in contact with Freebieforce is nearly impossible!! I have been trying to get out and get them to stop charge my Credit Card and their phone number on my Credit Card statement is 303-719-1341, CO. It is only a busy signal. I have been dialing scores of times, now for two months to get them to STOP! And I can’t. At this stage, I would NOT recommend you’re involvement with Freebieforce.com. When a company does not make itself available for contact, it’s probably a rip off. I’m sorry my friend talked me into it!

Freebies US Only

Hello all, I joined freebieforce a month ago and most of the freebies are only for US citizens. As I live in Canada, almost every “freebie” I try to get does not apply to me. With the phase 3 launch, they were saying that it would become international and have your own city in there.Well all they have for Canada is Toronto which is 3000 miles from where I live which is Calgary.

My membership expired today and they couldn’t renew it because I used a prepaid credit card to join. I have been trying to contact my upline for support with no success so I’ll just forget it for now. They should keep in touch with their new members. I guess its a good deal if you live in the United States but I can’t refer my Canadian friends to it because there isn’t very many freebies available for them (There are a couple-not enough to join I’d say).

The training material is clear and concise, with videos peppered throughout to make some concepts more clear. Project Payday has a 3-step process, called “methods” that help get you making money quickly and keep you making money.

Method 1 is where everyone begins. The training guide explains that to get started making money, you must participate in a referral forum. The guide gives you several to choose from, and even shows you what to do to start managing trades and “going green” to earn money right away. You log into the forum, locate someone who is “buying” referral opportunities (Buyer) and selling your services. You set up a trade agreement with the Buyer through the built-in trade manager, and then they give you their referral link. You use the link to log into the site and complete enough offers or credits to “go green” or show up on the Buyer’s list as a qualified referral. Say the Buyer wants to get a $600 television from one of these sites. If they need just 6 qualified referrals, they could pay 6 people $25 each to sign up and become a qualified referral, and they’ve just paid $150 for a $600 TV. This is where you make money – you offer to be a referral, go on the site, sign up and complete the offers required. Once you have met the requirements, you let the Buyer know, and they verify it with the site, then pay you the asking price for the referral.

It sounds easy, right? There’s a small catch. In order to become a qualified referrer, you must sign up a certain number of offers. There are many to choose from, including movie rentals, credit cards, credit reporting services, money making services, jewelry, coffee and more. Some of the offers are free to try, while others can cost from $0.99 – $50 or more, depending on what you are purchasing. This is usually an introductory offer, and must be cancelled within 6 days in order to keep recurring monthly fees or dues from being charged to your credit card. These fees can range from $7.95 – $79.95 or more per month.

The trick is, you can’t cancel too quickly, or you might end up “going red” and being forced to return any money you’ve earned back to the Buyer. If you sign up for the trial offer and cancel it a day or two later, you risk losing your referral pay. Most Buyers recommend cancelling on day 5 of a trial offer, just to be on the safe side.

It sounds simple enough: earn money just to go on a site and be a referral. Just remember that nearly every referral fee will cost you something, whether it’s a trial fee, a membership fee, or the like. And if you don’t keep meticulous records of your transactions (I recommend setting up an excel chart), otherwise you can end up paying through the nose when those monthly dues and fees start piling up.

To really be successful, you don’t want to stay on Method 1 for too long. Every site has numerous offers, but almost all sites have virtually the same offers. In addition, some offers are actually by the same company. For example, there might be five different credit report offers on one site, but they’re all the same company. Try to sign up for more than one of them and you’ll get rejected for duplication. At that point you might as well move on to Method 2.

Method 2 builds on Method 1. You’ve already signed up for several sites to “go green” and earned cash. Now you become the Buyer, buying greens from people who are working Method 1. You pay them to complete offers for you, usually a small percentage of the amount of the product or money you are receiving from the referral site. For instance, you want a $600 PayPal cash payout. If that payout requires 8 referrals, and you pay $20 per referral, then you’re paying $160 for a $600 payout, for a profit of $300. Not too bad. Just one of those a week will net you about $1200 per month in extra income.

Method 3 builds on Method 2. You go from buying referrals for cash to buying referrals for other items like electronics, which you can then sell on ebay or other auction sites. This method is described by Project PayDay as somewhat more lucrative than the other methods, since electronics may have a higher profit margin per referral than cash.

Bottom Line

Project Payday itself is an information source. You find out where to go to make the money, and what to do once you get there. Once you’ve gotten comfortable with Method 1 and 2, Project Payday even provides a mentor or two that can help you increase your income.

You can find plenty of help because they need your help to complete their offers, you will be doing the same once you start working on Method 2. Being a mentor is an easy way to find people to complete offers.

Project Payday also keeps in regular contact with you, e-mailing once or twice a week with “special offers” just like the ones you’ve been signing up for. These are generally offers such as a $1.97 trial offer on how to make money on eBay, and Project Payday refunds the trial fee back to you.

Money can be made with Project Payday, but the work is sometimes tedious, time-consuming, and detail-intensive. You must provide personal information (including your email address), thus increasing your spam e-mails and junk mail (I suggest you set up a special email address for this opportunity). Failure to note the details of the offers and keep track of orders and cancellations can result in significant financial losses.
