Step 6: Constructing A Website

Today web sites are becoming easier to create. You don’t even have to know a line of HTML in order to create an effective Web page yourself. Pick a Web address (otherwise known as a URL, or Uniform Resource Locator) that’s easy to remember. You can purchase a short domain-name alias, such as company.com, to replace a longer one like internetprovider.com/~username/companyname/index.html. If the ideal dot-com (.com) name isn’t available, you can choose one of the newer domain suffixes such as .biz.

An easy way to get a great website that has everything and is fully optimized is to use Site Build It, they help you every step of the way and provide plenty of video tutorials. This is the way to go if you don’t know anything about website building. Read my Site Build It article review for more information.

Another popular option is WordPress, a templating system which includes widgets that can be rearranged without editing PHP or HTML code, as well as themes that can be installed and switched between. The PHP and HTML code in themes can also be edited for more advanced customizations.

Deciding On A Top – Level Domain Name

Where does a business like yours get the easy-to-remember addresses you need? You purchase them from one of the approved domain name registrars. A registrar is a business that has been designated by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) as having the responsibility for keeping track of the names registered in one of the top-level domains. Originally, there were six domains; but as .com and others became crowded, alternatives were eventually approved.

If you need to purchase a domain name, you’ll need a good domain registration company. Team up with the internets best. GoDaddy the internets #1 domain registrar, also the company I use for all my domain registration needs.

The list of domains presented by ICANN indicates that certain domains are “restricted” only to certain types of individuals or organizations. For instance, .biz is restricted to businesses, .pro is restricted to licensed professionals, and so on. In actual practice, businesses don’t observe such restrictions very strictly. The .net domain, which was originally intended for network service providers such as ISPs and Web hosts, is commonly used by businesses that can’t find their ideal name in the .com domain, for example. You aren’t necessarily limited to one domain, either.

Provide Compelling Content

The textual component of a Web site is what attracts visitors and keeps them coming back on a regular basis. The more useful the information and compelling content you provide, the more visits your site will receive. By compelling content, I’m talking about words, headings, or images that induce visitors to interact with your site in some way. You can make your content compelling in a number of ways:

Provide a call to action, for example “Click Here!” or “Buy Now!”

Explain how the reader will benefit by clicking a link and exploring your web site.

Briefly and concisely summarize your business. Concise communication is key to having your dream realized.

Scan or use a digital camera to capture images of your sale items (or of the services you provide), and post them on a Web page called Products.

Don’t forget the personal touch when it comes to connecting with your customers’ needs. People who shop online don’t get to meet their merchants in person, so anything you can tell about yourself helps to personalize the process and put your visitors at ease.

Getting paid is the key to survival as well as success. When your business exists only online, the payment process is not always straightforward. Make your Web site a safe and easy place for customers to pay you. Provide different payment options and build your customers’ level of trust any way you can.

Becoming A Credit Card Merchant And Setting Up A Merchant Account

The words electronic commerce or e-commerce bring to mind visions of online forms and credit card data that is transmitted over the Internet. Do you have to provide such service in order to run a successful online business? Not necessarily. Being a credit card merchant makes life easier for your customers, to be sure, but it also adds complications and extra costs to your operation.

I don’t want to discourage you from becoming credit card ready by any means, but you need to be aware of the steps (and the expenses) involved, many of which may not occur to you when you’re just starting out. For example, you may not be aware of one or more of the following:

Merchant accounts: You have to apply and be approved for a special bank account called a merchant account in order for a bank to process the credit card orders that you receive. If you work through traditional banks, approval can take days or weeks. However, a number of online merchant account businesses are providing hot competition, which includes streamlining the application process.

Fees: Fees can be high but they vary widely, and it pays to shop around. Some banks charge a merchant application fee ($300 to $800). On the other hand, some online companies such as PayPal charge no application fee.

Discount rates: All banks and merchant account companies (and even payment companies like PayPal) charge a usage fee, deceptively called a discount rate. Typically, this fee ranges from 1 to 4 percent of each transaction. Plus, you may have to pay a monthly premium charge in the range of $30–70 to the bank.

American Express and Discover: If you want to accept payments from American Express and Discover cardholders, you must make arrangements through the companies themselves. You can apply online to be an American Express card merchant by going to the American Express Merchant Homepage and clicking the Apply to Accept the Card link. At the Discover Card merchant site, click the Become a Merchant link, which leads you to the application for credit card merchants.

Software and hardware: Unless you depend on a payment service such as PayPal, you need software or hardware to process transactions and transmit the data to the banking system. If you plan to accept credit card numbers online only and don’t need a device to handle actual “card swipes” from in-person customers, you can use your computer modem to transmit the data. 1st American Card Service lets you use software called PCCharge Express for processing transactions with your browser, but you have to either purchase the software for $295 or lease it for rates that vary from $22 to $34 per year. The hardware involved is a terminal or phone line, which you can either purchase for $229 or lease for anywhere from $17 to $26 per month, depending on the length of the lease.

The good news is that getting merchant status is becoming easier, as more banks accept the notion that businesses don’t have to have an actual, physical storefront in order to be successful.

The Internet may not seem like a place for the personal touch, but technology didn’t actually create the Internet and all of its content; people did that. In fact, the Internet is a great place to provide your clients and customers with outstanding, personal customer service.

In many cases, customer service on the Internet is a matter of being available and responding quickly to all inquiries. You check your e-mail regularly; you make sure you respond within a day; you cheerfully solve problems and hand out refunds if needed. By helping your customers, you help yourself, too. You build loyalty as well as credibility among your clientele. For many small businesses, the key to competing effectively with larger competitors is by providing superior customer service.

Your knowledge and experience are among your most valuable commodities. So you may be surprised when I suggest that you give them away for free. Why? It’s a “try before you buy” concept. Helping people for free builds your credibility and makes them more likely to pay for your services down the road.

Someone once told me “if you give everything and more away for free, then people will know what you have for sale is really good and worth buying”, and I truly believe that.

Many online entrepreneurs succeed by making their Web sites not only a place for sales and promotion but also an indispensable resource, full of useful hyperlinks and other information, that customers want to visit again and again. And always include a signature file with your message that includes the name of your business and a link to your business site.

Try them all and see which ones are most effective for you! Don’t forget about advertising offline as well, offline advertising can still be very effective.

Listing Your site with Search Engines

How, exactly, do you get listed on the search engines such as Yahoo! and Lycos? Frankly, it’s getting more difficult. Many of the big search services charge for listings. But some let you contribute a listing for free, though there’s no guarantee if or when you’ll see your site included in their databases.

Add your site to local searches: Most of the search engines have local search functions, and you should definitely appear there. Visit www.local.yahoo.com, www.local.google.com, and www.superpages.com to list your site.

You can also increase the chances that search services will list your site by including special keywords and site descriptions in the HTML commands for your Web pages. You place these keywords after a special HTML command (the <META> tag), making them invisible to the casual viewer of your site.

You will also need to make sure all your web pages have been search engine optimized, so the search engines will pick them up. Be sure to read my search engine optimization articles so you know exactly what you need to do.

Step 10: Review, Rewrite, and Revise

Getting your business online now and then updating your site regularly is better than waiting to unveil the perfect Web site all at one time. In fact, seeing your site improve and grow is one of the best things about going online. Over time, you can create contests, strike up cooperative relationships with other businesses, and add more background information about your products and services.

Businesses on the Web need to evaluate and revise their practices on a regular basis. Online business is a process of trial and error. Some promotions work better than others. The point is that it needs to be an ongoing process and a long-term commitment. Taking a chance and profiting from your mistakes is better than not trying in the first place.

Another thing to remember, content can become dated you may need to update or replace it from time to time. Also consider changing what’s on your home page from time to time. Add new pictures, new text, if there’s a holiday coming up use something holiday themed. People like to see new content and tire of looking at the same old thing.

A computer can do many things such as provide you with knowledge, socialization and entertainment for some of us we actually have found part time jobs on the internet.

It can also make us money should we feel ambitious enough to do some research. There are places out here, which actually do pay you for work you do, which is cool. However, like the real world there are scammers out here on the internet who hide behind a computer monitor.

Scammers running amok

Trust me I have spent plenty of time working on the internet trying those sites, which say they will earn you money, and after countless hours of work, the pay is still just as far away. Who needs things like that, when you are putting forth an honest effort? Those sites that say you can make money by reading emails are a joke I fell for. The only ones that may make some money on those types of deals are the ringmasters who sucker others in.

Paid for completing offers, man oh man this is another classic one that gets several people believing they will make money. You have to complete the offer to get the money and usually the offer is buying something, sure, you need to spend money to make money but that is ridiculous. You get pennies for doing work and you need to reach some high amount before they will cut you a check.

I can work anytime I want too, and smoke at my desk. I am my own boss, and this is doable for everyone if they have the self-control to sit and type a few hours a day.

You have to pay your own taxes though which can be a daunting task. You are most of the time an independent worker, not a part of the company per say. Just keep all your receipts for your taxes and pass them along to your accountant with the 1099 you will get from the company.

If you make any more the 600 dollars in a year from any one company, you must provide them with your social security number, or an employee ID number so they can report the wages to the IRS. They also send you a 1099, which looks similar to a w-4 most everyone else gets.

You get no benefits at all, except the benefit of less stress. Less stress is a great thing to me, my last job, which I held for almost 4 years, was very stressful, I very much hated to go in and do my twelve-hour shifts at the nursing home.

There are plenty of places out here on the internet where even the self-employed can find health insurance. A quick search for self-employed health insurance will give you some web sites and companies. Therefore, you can work from home and still get insurance if you make enough to cover it.

The first advice I would like to give you may or may not set well with those who have had negative experiences with debt. In America we are taught that we “gotta have it” and “now”. So buying things we can’t afford is very common. Personally our family has come to the point of deciding never to borrow money again, not from the bank, not from family, not from the store. I don’t know that I can convince you of taking such drastic measures but, I hope that I can at least convince you not to start your business with borrowed money. So my advice to you is that you should under no circumstances go into debt to start a business.

This means that if you don’t have the money to start your business than you don’t start that business until you do have the money. This may not be a problem for those of you would want to start a business with little start up costs but for those of you who need to invest a large amount of money to start might be feel that it is impossible to do it any other way. Lets explore the possibility of NOT going into debt and how and why this should be considered.

In the article “Should I work from home” we touched on the fact that it is important to find a business that you have a passion for. If you have found this business that brings you joy, is it safe to say that if you started it with debt that it may feel less joyful? The burden of debt is just that – a burden. Why do we want to ruin the joy of finding the right business with the burden of debt.

So your response at this point may be ” There is just no way I can do it without debt”. And my question to you is. Are you sure? What our culture here in American as well as others, has been lead to believe is that if we don’t act right away we will miss the opportunity. I am all for opportunities but unless they are free we should not buy into to the instant gratification mentality our culture has conformed to. Good things can also come with patience. If your goal is to start a business that you love but you don’t have the funds to start it then at this point your job is to have patience and become creative.

So where do you get the money for this new business you want to start? Only 50 years ago or so borrowing money was a very rare occurrence, yet how did people start businesses or purchase high priced things? The answer is ,they SAVED. This seems to almost be a bad word in today’s culture. Why save when you can just borrow and make payments? What saving can do instead of borrowing is give you the satisfaction of accomplishment. When you have saved for something that you have been working so hard on and then actually get to buy it, the joy and satisfaction and even relief from that experience is well worth the wait.

You may feel that waiting to start the business of your dreams is not an option but it is. By making a plan to be patient and save you can not only start your business of right but you can use the money you do earn right away to grow your business and support your family. Mary and her husband decided that her going to work outside the home was not an option so she decided to look into a home-based business. Her friend was a consultant for company that had a good reputation and nice products so she decided that she would become a consultant for this company. She was told that the products would practically sell themselves and she like them so she thought it wouldn’t be that difficult the make some extra money. Her up line told her that she could easily sell these products and would check with her to find out how she was doing. Since the family could not make ends meet, Mary and her husband decided that they would put the $200 is would cost her to become a consultant on a credit card because she thought she could pay it off with a few parties.

After a few parties Mary did make enough to pay off the $200 but because they need the money she decided to buy groceries and other needs for the family. Mary did find out that after a while booking parties was getting more difficult to do so she had to really work hard on promoting and calling people. She started to feel like people where avoiding her because all she was doing was trying to sell them her products.

Mary eventually started to loose interest in her business and quit consulting for this company. She had a ton of products that she would eventually give away as gifts. Mary ended up having to go to work at Walmart on the night shift after her husband got home from work. She still has the $200 debt that she started with.

Lucy is a mom of 2 children with one child on the way. Her husband works 60 hours a week plus the 2 hours commute round trip. They had a mortgage payment, 2 car payments and a couple thousand dollars on credit cards. Lucy and her husband decided she was going to need to find some kind of work to help the family financially. Lucy and her husband had gone through a lot of financial trouble throughout their marriage and decided that they had had enough with debt. The had become sick and tired of being sick and tired of the foolish financial decisions they had been making and decided they were not going to borrow money again.

Lucy decided that she wanted to find a business that she enjoyed so that it could be fulfilling for her. Since Lucy was a child she loved gardens. She spent much of her life working in a garden her grandfather. She was very knowledgeable when it came to gardening. Gardening was true passion of hers. So Lucy decided she would try to find some way for her to work with her love of gardening. She asked her friends that had always been supportive of her to see if they had any ideas of what kind of business she could do that didn’t require a lot of money, with her children with her, and while she was pregnant.

After getting a few good ideas and a few bad ones she decided she was going to start gift basket business. Her baskets would include all the essential tools for starting a garden, plus a free lesson in gardening for each new customer. The cost to start her business was going to be around $200 for supplies. Lucy and her husband had decided they were not going to borrow money but did not have any money to invest so Lucy had a garage sale and sold some things on ebay. She sold enough stuff to cover her $200 investment and got started right away. Lucy and her husband had also decided to sell one of their cars and buy a cheaper car that had no payments to help reduce some their stress. Since Lucy life was very busy already she had to work hard on the planning of her business. She worked on it during the day when she could as well as nights after the kids were asleep. She enjoyed working and planning and soon came up with everything she needed. She had a great support group of friends cheering her on because they knew how much she loved gardening and thought this was a great plan.

Lucy soon was making a much needed extra income and after 6 months she her business had grown so much she decided to offer her products to the world through a website.

Lucy never had to borrow money and her business made her happy and an income. She loved to teach other people what her grandfather taught her about gardening.

Mary had made the decision to become a consultant for a company that she had no passions for. She did like the products but selling them didn’t give her a sense of fulfillment. Because she didn’t believe in the product from her heart others noticed that and felt all she was doing was trying to sell her stuff. She also decided to go into debt to pay for her kit that she ended up never paying off but instead adding to the debt she was trying to reduce. She also lots heart because she didn’t have anyone but her up line supporting her.

Lucy on the other hand had come to a point of change and decided never to borrow money again. She also chose a business that gave her joy and was fulfilling. She used her good supportive friends to ask advice and bounce ideas off of. She started her business with no debt so she was able to use her earnings right away for growing her business as well as use some for family needs.

Although these two characters are fictional they both have a lot of my own story in them. I was a Mary and I am now a Lucy. I encourage you to really take time to think about your decisions with choosing a business. I also know that there is no real good reason to go into debt for any business. If you really feel the business is something you truly have a heart for then save, save, save your money so you can start your dream business of right.
