Search engine optimization specialists and business owners know how important Google local can be. With massive competition in some markets it becomes of utmost importance to be as high in those listings as possible.

Do a local search from your computer and you will see why high rankings in Google local results are so important. In competitive markets the local results are the only thing shown on the first half of the page. As an SEO specialist I see the crucial need for my clients to be near the top of these results.

The question then obviously becomes, “Is there a way to help businesses rise in the rankings for local search?” The answer is yes and no.

With traditional SEO we are left guessing at what Google’s algorithm is looking for to improve rankings, so we test different methods and gauge their success. Recently a patent was given to Google for local search as well, so we must use this method of testing as well. Some of this testing has showed positive results and I will share some of them with you below.

Getting your information correctly categorized on the major data providers is the first and most important step in getting higher placement in Google local listings. InfoUsa, Acxiom and Localeze are the most important. Make sure you update this information with them so that they all match. Make it as easy as possible for Google to understand what your business does.

The next step is to put the same information into as many of the local directories as possible. Some of these include Yelp, Yellowpages.com, City Voter and many more. Again these links to your site tell Google that you are locally relevant.

Lastly you should always get customers to leave good reviews of your business on Google local. This does not seem to always make a difference but there is some evidence it has an impact in some cases.
